Calling all ears!

We're looking for recommendations of power pop tunes that fit one or more of the following descriptions (so much the better if they're on indie labels/self-released):
  • Songs that would have been #1 hits in a perfect world
  • Songs that are infectious and effervescent
  • Songs that directly channel specific '60s bands and later power pop influences
  • Songs about music / making records / power pop / British Invasion
  • Songs about being independent / taking matters into your own hands
  • Songs about loss / sadness / unrewarded efforts
  • Songs about growing / surviving / thriving
Where possible, please include links to YouTube videos, Spotify, etc.

Also of interest are:
  • Great stories about power pop bands
  • Resources such as vintage footage
  • Pet answers—your own or favorite quotes—to "What is power pop?"
Please post in comments here or send to info@powerpopmovie.com.

  3. One of my favorite Dennis Pash Leopards songs was titled ''Time Warp''. Some of the lyrics went something like.."You make fun of my records , cuz they're not brand new. You say you can't stand the Beatles, the Kinks and the Who. You think that you're with it but you don't know where it's at. How can you look forward when you never can look back. I'm stuck in a Time Warp (repeat) and I'm never gonna leave it anymore.." . For various reasons the song never got released.

  6. Throwback Suburbia from Portland, Or

In 2006 the band released Four Play, a four-song EP produced by Mark Plati (David Bowie, The Cure) and Tom McKay. Their single “Circles” helped them to become the most played unsigned artist on several FM radio stations across the country, garnering regular rotation on Rodney Bingenheimer's show on KROQ in Los Angeles.

I was going to also suggest the almost Knack-worthy "Love Found You" by Love Nut, but I can't find a link to it anywhere. Speaking of the Knack - how about Berton Averre or Prescott Niles? Good luck, I'm really looking forward to seeing this!

  15. Brad Jones: Miss July

His only album Gilt-Flake (2000) is a real masterpiece. Brad is now a noteworthy music producer in Nashville.

    The Nines: Melanie
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jZWFJJkXAw
It may sound an oxymoron but this is one of the best power pop tunes ever and there's not even a guitar in it. The Nines are a Toronto band.

DM3: Can't Get What You Want
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=983uz05eibs
Dom Mariani, the Godfather of Power Pop. But you have to go to Australia to speak to him or ask Mitch Easter that have worked quite a lot with Dom.

The Innocents Sooner Or Later https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epI9E893Ybo The Innocents Come Together https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUyd4UYgdzQ The Innocents began life as Beathoven and recorded with Kim Fowley who intended playing starmaker.Long amazing story but it didn't happen. Sooner Or Later had a Monkees element with guitars being played by a session guy Jarryl Wirth who did then join the band. RCA released the record at different times in different states so it only just broke the top 20. A doco on the Innocents is in production.

Bozos - Fool Out of Me: https://youtu.be/fu-IltK1P8o?list=FLyrq97uVp75D5mzwiWJ35pQ
Bad quality, but incredible gem. Band member Glenn can be reached via email, has copies to sell. Real nice guy

Letters - Nobody Loves Me: https://youtu.be/LnO_3p9UboQ?list=FLyrq97uVp75D5mzwiWJ35pQ
One of the ultimate PP jams

Toms - Lets Be Friends: https://youtu.be/etjI6oLG_HA?list=FLyrq97uVp75D5mzwiWJ35pQ
Great one-man-band record. Kinda like Emitt Rhodes on speed with bigger hooks

  21. Butch Walker and his 90s power pop band Marvelous 3.

First of all Marvelous 3 put out 3 albums and had a minor hit called Freak Of The Week in 1999 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Obkkxng-0g). Butch Walker (lead singer and guitarist from this band) is now a big solo artist and producer/songwriter. His solo stuff is very power pop influenced as well..Marvelous 3 were so underrated though. They got screwed by their label so they were only around for a few years. They put out Three AWESOME albums for anyone who likes good powerpop "Math and Other Problems" "Hey! Album" and "ReadySexgo!". Also check out all of Butch's Solo albums (for power pop fans id recommend "Left Of Self Centered", "Letters", and "The Spade)

heres a few awesome M3 songs

also here is some good stuff from butchs solo career

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ol31cisylC8 (Maybe its just me from "Letters")

Seriously though. Hey! Album and Readysexgo by Marvelous 3 are two of my favorite power pop records of all time
